Sweet Sorrow is the backup story in New Visions, Issue 2, the second issue of John Byrne's Star Trek: New Visions comic series. It was published on August 6, 2014. In this story, Janice Rand departs the USS Enterprise.
Summary[]
- Captain's log, stardate 2908.4. In orbit around planet Elsinor H-25. Ship's mission, pickup and transport of an injured member of the Federation science party assigned to this remote world. Personal note: The injured man is the former fiancee of captain's yeoman Janice Rand…
Leonard McCoy operated on Andrew Calloway, but Christine Chapel warned Rand that he might not survive. Rand took solace in the recreation room with her friends Tonia Barrows and Nyota Uhura. McCoy was able to save Calloway's brain functions, but he would require artificial life support.
Rand decided to leave the ship and care for him. When she told Marla McGivers she had no reason to stay aboard, McGivers said she thought Rand and Kirk might get together. Rand said Kirk had never reciprocated her feelings. In the transporter room, John Kyle wished her well. Kirk arrived to give her a silent farewell as she beamed to the USS Gregory.
