Swooper

A Swooper in 2267 (The Infinite Vulcan)

A Swooper was a species native to the planet Phylos II, they are known for their distinctively pitched shriek.

Specifics[]

Swoopers were approximately fifteen feet long and like most life on Phylos were actually a type of plant. They were capable of flight and had root-like appendages which could be used as limbs. (ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation; TAS episode & Log Two novelization: The Infinite Vulcan)

Their coils were as strong as an Earth anaconda. The spinning coils helped kept them airborne like organic helicopters. (TAS - Log Two novelization: The Infinite Vulcan)

History[]

At one point in December of 2267, while Helen Latham was yelling at him, Daniel Latham claimed that her shriek was not unlike that of the Phylosian swooper. (TOS novel: The Case of the Colonist's Corpse)

They appeared to attack as a reflex action, but also seemed under the control of Phylosians, who had a group of them attack a Starfleet landing party and kidnap Spock in 2269. (TAS episode & Log Two novelization: The Infinite Vulcan)

Curiously, with the exception of Stavos Keniclius, Phylos was supposedly unknown until the USS Enterprise arrived in 2269. (TAS episode: "The Infinite Vulcan")

In 2270, swoopers seeded by the Providers were encountered by the Enterprise crew near a Slaver outpost. (Heritage Models RPG module: Adventure Gaming in the Final Frontier)
