She was a native of Mars, and attended Starfleet Academy and Starfleet Security School. After graduation, Ensign Elliot was assigned to the USS Gagarin, where she quickly earned the respect of her crewmates for her professional abilities and her athletic prowess.
By 2279, she held the position of chief of security. In that year, the Gagarin was attacked by Klingons, and Elliot was among the twenty-two crew members taken prisoner. She spent the following eight years in a prison camp on the planet Pao'la, sharing a cell with fellow officer Stephen Garrovick, and forced to work in that world's dilithium mines. During that time, she earned a special animosity from one Klingon guard, Khulr.
Elliot was rescued from Pao'la in 2287, in a joint operation by Captains Koloth and James T. Kirk. Upon her return, she was granted a promotion to full Lieutenant, bypassing the rank of Lieutenant junior grade in deference to her time in captivity. (TOS novel: In the Name of Honor)
