Synthotonin was a component of Federation bio-neural gel packs, which reduced the cell activity levels of the circuits for periodic cellular regeneration. In a normal maintenance cycle, synthononin would be introduced into a gel pack once a month, with only one unit being affected at any one time. In 2372, the USS Voyager suffered ship-wide power failures when all gel packs were infused with synthotonin simultaneously. (VOY short story: "Good Night, Voyager")
