Tantalum (symbol Ta) is a chemical element, a transition metal with atomic number 73 on the periodic table.

Characteristics and history[]

Tantalum has an atomic mass of 180.948. This element was discovered by Humans for the first time on Earth's European continent in Sweden, in the year 1804. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

Tantalum was used by the Federation in the 23rd century as an effective vault liner. (TOS - Star Trek 2 novelization: Space Seed)
