The tactical station aboard the Federation starship Enterprise-D in the year 2364.

A tactical console or tactical station was an adaptation of technology, a computer control console interface for tactical systems manned by a tactical officer or tactical personnel. Tactical consoles provided electronic and mechanical support and tactical display readouts for tactical weapons and defense systems on space stations, spacecraft and outposts.

Tactical consoles are one of the main consoles in the game mechanics of ST video game: Star Trek Online.

Subsystem overview[]

In the 22nd century, the United Earth's Earth Starfleet had a tactical station of the main bridge of early spacecraft, usually manned by the armory officer, an operations division position that included the duties that are usually associated with the tactical officer. (Enterprise)

By the 23rd century, a Federation Starfleet tactical station could be configured to be operated from a number of other panels on the bridge or operations center. In some cases, the security officer on the bridge doubled as tactical officer. (Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds)

In other cases certain tactical functions could be controlled by the crew at the navigator or operations stations. Other weapons and defense functions could remain at a separate console in that case. Weapons control could sometimes also be assigned to the helm. (Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, Star Trek: The Original Series; ST reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)

When the starship Enterprise was refit in the 2270s decade, a new tactical station was installed on the bridge's port fore quarter. This was nominally occupied by the tactical officer who would also serve as the weapons officer and bridge security officer. (TOS movie, novelization & comic adaptation: The Motion Picture)

In the 24th century, a Federation starship's tactical station usually included security, defense systems, weapons control and communications. Configurations of this type included the Galaxy-class Enterprise-D, Intrepid-class Voyager, Defiant-class USS Defiant and California-class USS Cerritos. (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Lower Decks)
