Is it worth noting the similarity between Ayel's name, and the Rihannsu name Ael? Since Kurtzman and Orci are self-proclaimed fans of a number of Trek novels, I wouldn't put it past them as at least being inspired by My Enemy, My Ally and Diane Duane's other novels.
