I'm thinking about splitting this article, because not all Captains command a ship and not all Commanding Officers are Captains, especially in the alien fleets. Any objections? --Chops 00:54, 21 Nov 2005 (UTC)

What about the differences between the rank structures of the different services. A Captain in an organization such as the Army is not the same as a Captain in the Navy or in Starfleet? Servo 03:25, 11 May 2007 (UTC)

Does anyone have any objection to me re-wording the phrase "the rank of Captain is the highest commissioned officer rank." This isn't strictly true. Captain is the highest Line Officer rank (ranks above this are flag officers), however all admirals are also commissioned officers. – CommodoreFisher 20:12, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

I'm going to guess no one will object, since your comment is completely valid. --Captain Savar 15:32, 11 November 2

a commanding officer maybe addressed as captain when they are in command of their ship no matter what their rank is am I right or wrongStephen2162 (talk) 23:47, January 27, 2014 (UTC)Stephen2162

Any officer in command of a ship will be called Captain regardless of rank; however, they may not necessarily hold the rank. When Jadzia Dax commanded the Defiant during Sisko's assignment to Starbase 375 during the Dominion War she was still a Lieutenant Commander, but was addressed as Captain when aboard the ship. - Nx1701g (talk) 23:59, January 27, 2014 (UTC)

you just proved my pointStephen2162 (talk) 15:34, January 28, 2014 (UTC)Stephen2162
