on the issue of placing this story in the year 2275, this seems inconsistent with the uniform descriptions placed in the book (Spock in "sciences blue" on pp.17 and Kirk in gold on pp.35, etc. the list goes on). -- Captain M.K.B. 15:23, 19 March 2007 (UTC)

Well the placement was from the timeline from Voyages of Imagination, which is based on several previous timelines. The placement note from My Enemy, My Ally may help to explain the placement.

"Story is set immediately after The Wounded Sky and one "standard year" prior to The Romulan Way. Note that that the setting originally intended for Duane's novels were a purported second five-year mission prior to Star Trek: The Motion Picture - an idea since discarded. Therefore, crew ranks and Chapel's pursuit of her doctorate are incorrect for this period. These discrepancies will be corrected in the forthcoming Rihannsu omnibus edition."

Although this applies to the Rihannsu, it looks like this novel was moved to fit into the Duane novel continuity being established. Why this sounds like a good move to me, I have spotted other dubious placements by the timeline, such as the moving of The Disinherited to just before "The Gamesters of Triskelion", when the best placement is before "Catspaw". --The Doctor 15:31, 19 March 2007 (UTC)
