I can't find any reference to Mitchell being Kirk's first officer on this ship -- is there another source or is this this an assumption/error? -- Captain MKB 22:28, 7 July 2009 (UTC)
- Agreed, there seems to be no indication; I did a search through for "Gary" "Mitchell" "first" and "executive" separately and couldn't find anything within their contexts. I checked the Gary Mitchell page as well, and it repeats the statement that he was first officer, but does not give any different source. --Captain Savar 00:43, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
I can see how one might assume this, as Kirk was a commander, soon to be captain and mitchell had become lieutenant commander. The only problem is Kirk's conversation with one of the admirals about how Starfleet doesn't want Mitchell as Kirk's new first officer, and it would be convoluted to think that he would have held that position to Kirk previously.
Ghioghe seemed to be a pretty complicated fleet action -- Kirk (ranked as CMDR) commanded the cruiser Lydia S. and had Mitchell onboard (unclear whether Gary was a Lt CMDR or just LT at that point, but he was Lt CMDR afterwards) -- but the fleet action was commanded by Sieren, on a different vessel, presumably with a rank of commander or higher. Seems the personnel present were on short range ships with small crews, presumably not on long term assignments. -- Captain MKB 03:26, 8 July 2009 (UTC)
