Tanzania was a nation-state in east Africa on the planet Earth. It bordered the Indian Ocean, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda, and Kenya.

By the 23rd century, Tanzania was a province of the United States of Africa. In the early 2260s, the region experienced civil unrest as rebel separatists rioted in the city of Dar as Salaam. U.S.A. army forces stopped them. A year later, the separatists held an aircraft full of hostages in Somalia, but special forces captured them and freed the hostages.
