The prologue of this book depicts how Enterprise command was transferred from Pike to Kirk in 2265. It was also depicted in Chapter 6 of The Autobiography of James T. Kirk and Chapter 2 of Enterprise: The First Adventure.
Enterprise' first mission under Kirk is also the subject of Enterprise: The First Adventure. It is however very different.
The prologue also shows a call between in which Kirk asks Leonard McCoy (currently on Capella IV), to serve on board Enterprise. I similar scene appears in Chapter 6 of The Autobiography of James T. Kirk but set after the events of Where No Man Has Gone Before.
Chapter one contains a scene in which Kirk befriends McCoy and gives him the nickname Sawbones. The scene takes place in a Starfleet Medical Research Hospital, in Orpheus City on Vega IX, in 2262 while Kirk serves on board USS Sacagawea. It is implied Kirk met him before in the same hospital. The Autobiography of James T. Kirk (chapter 5) describes the events differently: according to the Autobiography Kirk met McCoy when both served on board USS Hotspur.
