"The Child" was the 13th of 13 regular episode scripts prepared for the abortive development of the television series Star Trek: Phase II. The episode went unproduced, and the script was heavily rewritten to become The Next Generation episode The Child. The original version of the story did eventually find publication, as the complete script was reprinted in the reference work Phase II: The Lost Series.
In this story, in the Phase II continuity, Ilia becomes pregnant and gives birth to a girl, while an alien ship poisons the Enterprise crew with radiation.
Publisher's description[]
- Story Introduction
- Because of its subject matter, "The Child" is definitely a story that could not have been part of The Original Series. As such, it is a strong representation of the new ground Phase II might have explored in its time, making the series as distinct as the original.
