The Danurian Factor was one of two TOS-era roleplay adventures released by Last Unicorn Games. It was featured in the Star Trek: The Original Series Core Game Book in October 1999. Players joined the crew of Captain Evan Foster's USS Yorktown during a mission to the Sicondor Sector in 2269.

Description[]

The Sicondor Sector offers Narrators a ready-made environment for them to test their skills and ingenuity. While much of the sector remains a mystery, awaiting the attentions of Federation explorers, the Federation has already established an outpost on one of the sector's planets.
The actions of the Crew as they explore this sector and respond to the situations they encounter can determine the success or failure of the Federation presence in this part of space. The Danurian Factor is a ready-to-play episode to get your Crew started exploring the mysteries of Sicondor. If the Crew doesn't yet have a ship, you may use the information on the USS Yorktown to provide the characters with a vessel and help fill out any gaps in the Crew.

Summary[]

Isabelle Danur's sect of psychokinetic Augments watch as Khan Noonien Singh abandons Earth in the SS Botany Bay in 1996. Her people agree to do the same, launching themselves aboard the DY-100-class sleeper ship Terrapin. Malfunctions misdirect the spacecraft to the Sicondor Sector. When the ship's crew awaken early in the 23rd century, they make way for the nearest class M planet, Sicon III.

Decades later, the USS Yorktown is assigned to chart the sector and help Sicon Prime outpost personnel establish a Federation colony on the third planet, unaware that it is already inhabited. The starship arrives at Sicon Prime to find its outpost destroyed and its staff gone missing. Yorktown follows an ion trail from Sicon Prime to Sicon III, where sporadic human and Klingon lifesigns are detected. Captain Evan Foster's landing party encounters the Danurians and a small contingent of Klingons who joined them five years earlier.

Augment first commander Dian'Ara Askal is soon found murdered. Presuming that the killer must be one of the Yorktown visitors, Danurians put them all on trial to ferret out her killer.

Last Unicorn RPG module: Star Trek: The Original Series Core Game Book – The chapter containing the adventure was introduced with a vignette describing Yorktown first entering the Sicon system. It also provided background on the system, Evan Foster, Sandira Vashenka, additional Yorktown personnel, and Klingon personnel stats.

Background[]

About the Core Game Book and its ready-to-play adventure, LUG line developer Kenneth Hite said, "If it weren't a Trek product, I think you'd still have to admire the writing, which is by a gallery of the industry's best names: Robin Laws, Jim Cambias, S. John Ross, John Snead, Jackie Cassada and Nicky Rea. The original series is larger-than-life heroic swashbuckling adventure... For things to feel like a Star Trek story, there have to be certain elements like human action and free will, high levels of individual competence, optimism, and broadly "cinematic" action unconstrained by the minutiae of physics or history." (Kenneth Hite interview posted 1 November 1999 at the TrekToday website.)
