Background information[]
- The 2380 events of the short story take place five years after "What You Leave Behind" as well as after "Star Trek Nemesis", while the main story occurs in 1959.
- Like other SNW stories, this story is separate from the continuity of the contemporary Pocket Books novels.
- The author commented: “I wrote a 2016 Star Trek: Strange New Worlds short story called “The Dreamer and the Dream,” and it’s about Benny Russell. It’s like 10 years later, and he’s still in the asylum. But he’s been writing Star Trek for 10 years now. So, he has boxes in his room with the names of captains, and his therapist convinces him that, in order to get out, he has to put all his anger and depression and even hatred into one last Deep Space Nine episode called “Deep Space Nine: Epilogue.” And so he starts doing that, but he doesn’t realize that what he’s writing is actually happening in the 24th century, and his therapist is a Pah Wraith! Manipulating him. So knowing that I had written that years before, this was a way of me, taking one last time for us to see Benny Russell in this last page. I figured, it could be whatever you want. It could be the dreamer or the dream. It could be either way, you know.”
