"The Exterminator" was the proposed title which Benny Russell gave to a story he was planning in 1953 for the Incredible Tales of Scientific Wonder magazine.

Russell planned it to feature a killer robot and time travel. He also planned to feature a well-meaning Negro scientist who nearly destroys the Earth. After being reminded by his girlfriend Cassie Johnson of Albert Macklin's laws of robots not harming humans, Russell planned to change the lead character to a half-human, half-robot. (DS9 novelization: Far Beyond the Stars)

"The Exterminator" is an apparent reference to the film The Terminator, and the scientist to the character Miles Dyson from its first sequel, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, who was played by Joe Morton.
