Attack of the Chakuun, shock troops of the Tholians! — "The Fallen, Part One" is a TOS comic published by Marvel-Paramount Comics in 1997, the tenth issue in the Star Trek: Early Voyages series, set during Christopher Pike's captaincy of the USS Enterprise. It features the start of a two-part arc, The Fallen.

Description[]

Carlotti has nightmares about the Chakuun, the warrior troops of the Tholians who slew her family. Meanwhile, Pike, on shore leave, takes Number One on a trip — to meet his father.

Summary[]

The USS Enterprise responds to a distress signal from the Federation colony on Jubal, which is under attack by Chakuun ghostships. As the starship approaches the Jubal system, José Tyler picks up a warp signature, and Captain Pike orders pursuit, hoping to stop the invaders before they can do more damage. One vessel reverses course to engage the Enterprise. One shot from its cannon causes extensive damage and knocks out the shields. Number One reports that Chakuun shields open a tiny aperture for firing only for a second, so Pike takes phaser control. Right before the enemy shoots, Pike fires full phasers through the aperture, destroying the enemy vessel. The Enterprise is caught in the blast shockwave, then slowly heads for Earth.

Captain's log, stardate 371.2.
It's been ten days since we destroyed the Chakuun ghostship and limped home to Earth. As I'd feared, the Chakuun incursion was just the start of a Tholian expansionist campaign. Once we're shipshape, the Enterprise is to lead a task force back to safeguard other Federation holdings. Meanwhile, the crew have been granted a welcome day's furlough.

Pike invites Number One to visit his father in Mojave, California. Pike broods after Admiral Josh Pike gives Chris a chilly reception. Chris hopes his father will give him tactical advice about the upcoming battle, but Number One thinks Chris just misses his father.

Meanwhile, Mia Colt leads Sita Mohindas, Spock and Tyler on a tour of her hometown, New York City. Mohindas wonders if the yeoman is interested in her handsome captain, but Colt says any shipboard relationship would be unprofessional. That evening while at dinner, Mohindas sets up Colt and Tyler. Tyler knows she's not interested in him, but he asks her out anyway. She's shaken by his confidence and doesn't know what to say, except that she has to think about it.

En route to Florence, Italy, Gabrielle Carlotti wakes from a Chakuun nightmare just as her shuttle arrives. She visits her aunt, overreacting when she sees her brothers playing war with replica Chakuun fighters. She sits down with them to explain why she was upset, reminding them that their parents were killed by Chakuun.

Captain's log, stardate 371.6.
A Federation task force comprising the Achilles, the Nelson, the Providence, the Brazzaville and ourselves are patrolling the Diomed Cluster, the disputer border zone with the Tholian Assembly. However, a fragmented distress call has been received from the Federation's Theta Kalyb colony. We'll be within transporter range in a few minutes. Frankly, I'm expecting the worst.

Landing parties beam down, but the colony has been destroyed, with smoke and flaming buildings everywhere. Aboard the Enterprise, Tyler picks up multiple contacts, as a Chakuun war fleet fill the viewscreen.

To be continued...
