Carlotti's revenge! — "The Fallen, Part Two" is a TOS comic published by Marvel-Paramount Comics in 1997, the eleventh issue in the Star Trek: Early Voyages series, set during Christopher Pike's captaincy of the USS Enterprise. It features the conclusion of a two-part arc, The Fallen.
Description[]
- The Enterprise rushes to the aid of the citizens on planet Theta Kalyb, who are being attacked by the Chakuun, the warrior race responsible for the death of Carlotti's family years earlier. On the planet surface, she faces her worst nightmares — the enemy.
- While the emergency crew works on the planet below, on the Enterprise the ship's shields and life support are taking a beating from the Chakuun ships.
Summary[]
- Captain's log, supplemental
- The Federation colony on Theta Kalyb is a ruin. The Chakuun, a warrior race used as elite shocktroops by their Tholian overlords, have decimated it as part of a brutal territorial dispute. We have beamed down relief teams to do the best they can for those few who have survived.
- High above the planet, an even greater task awaits the rest of us... the Chakuun war fleet. The refitted and enhanced weapon systems of my taskforce ships are enough to deal with the smaller fighter craft. But we are still no match for the terrifying ghostships.
The USS Brazzaville is obliterated, and the USS Enterprise suffers heavy damage to engineering. USS Achilles Captain Adam Crowe ejects two class F shuttlecraft loaded with photon torpedoes and detonates them with phasers, causing a shockwave that disables several ghostships. Chakuun retaliate by destroying the Achilles. Mia Colt confesses to José Tyler that a date wouldn't be so bad if they survive the battle.
Meanwhile, on the surface, O'Neil and Gabrielle Carlotti spot a fighter crashing nearby. She grabs a phaser rifle to check for survivors, discovering an unconscious Chakuun in body armor. She sets the rifle to lethal power and aims it at the wounded pilot, but reason overcomes emotion and she doesn't fire. Removing the pilot's helmet reveals a woman with bronze skin bleeding blue blood.
- Field log, Chief Medical Officer Boyce
- The relief teams have established eight mercy camps along the fringe of the ruined colony. I am forced to move between them to coordinate the relief as radiation backwash from the Chakuun bombardment is making communication impossible. It's also restricting our links with the taskforce. I have no idea how the war is going... But right now, I have more immediate concerns...
O'Neil alerts Boyce that Carlotti has yet to return, but Boyce can't spare any personnel to search for her. In the crashed fighter, the Chakuun general accuses humanity of being an arrogant child race unable to understand alien values. Carlotti points out that the Chakuun's overlords, the Tholians, grab territory whenever they feel like it, but the general explains how space shifts, requiring periodic border realignment every eight cycles. Sensing that Carlotti's anger is personal, the general learns how Carlotti's family was killed. The general is confused why Carlotti still won't shoot her. Carlotti says humans seek peace and mutual understanding, and will save an enemy life whenever possible out of compassion.
Armed Chakuun soldiers suddenly materialize aboard the fighter. The general orders them not to fire, sparing Carlotti, returning compassion in kind. The three Chakuun beam away, and Carlotti returns to Boyce. In orbit, the remaining ghostships break off and depart.
- Captain's log, supplemental
- The Enterprise and the Nelson have transferred all the survivors of the incident to the starbase at Algol, where we now undergo repairs. Though tensions remain, it seems the Tholian war has been averted... principally thanks to one person.
Carlotti confesses to Pike that she may now be able to get past hating the Chakuun.
