Devices and desires. — "The First Casualty" is the 71st issue of DC Comics's 1989 series of TNG comics. It is the first issue in the five-part War and Madness story arc written by Michael Jan Friedman, drawn by Gordon Purcell and Terry Pallot, and published in 1995.
Publisher's description[]
- From solicitations
- Artists Gordon Purcell and Terry Pallot come aboard as the new regular art team starting with Star Trek: The Next Generation #71. In part one of "War and Madness," a major five-part story arc, the Federation’s fragile peace with the enigmatic hive-beings the Tholians is shattered when a Tholian ship destroys both Klingon and Federation outposts. But the Enterprise soon learns that a force far more sinister is behind the attacks — something before which the Federation, the Klingons, and the Tholians are all … irrelevant.
Summary[]
Federation colonies and a Starfleet starship are destroyed by Tholians. The Tholian commander is out to avenge wrongs perpetrated against his people. The Enterprise is ordered to investigate after picking up an expert on Tholian military tactics, Kyle Riker. Meanwhile, members of the Enterprise crew ponder their future, as glimpsed by Jean-Luc Picard during his last encounter with Q.
Log entries[]
- Captain's log, supplemental.
- We have met the starship Achilles. In order to take aboard Kyle Riker, my first officer's father. We will need the elder Riker's particular expertise on Tholian military tactics if we are to defuse the threat at hand. Fortunately, my first officer assures me there will be no hard feelings between him and his father… despite the face that Kyle Riker abandoned his son to pursue his career… when the boy was only fifteen.
