The First Men in the Moon was a work of literature by Human author H. G. Wells, first published on Earth in the early 20th century.

History[]

The story was based on scientific experiments conducted by scientists Cavor and Bedford, whom Wells used as the basis for the lead characters. In the book, Cavor and Bedford went to the Moon in a spacecraft powered by cavorite, where they encountered a hostile insectoid race called Selenites as well as insectoids, and Cavor was believed dead at the end of the story.

In the late 23rd century, the crew of the USS Enterprise discovered Cavor and his spacecraft, and were initially skeptical of his claiming to be someone they thought was only fictional. They soon determined that he was telling the truth. Captain Christopher Pike and Lieutenant Commander Spock were both familiar with the plot of the story. (TOS - New Visions comic: "The Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner")

Wells' book had previously been implied to have basis in the reality of Star Trek continuity when Cavor's Gravity Devices was listed on the Promenade directory in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine set decoration.
