It was released twice in 1979, packaged with other stories. This was the sixth of seven stories set during Captain James T. Summary[]
- Captain's log, stardate 5466.9.
- The Enterprise is in orbit around the outpost colony world of Ribol II, on orders from the Federation Agricultural Division, to try and find a solution to the destructive plague of dranzers, which wipes out seventy to ninety percent of the grain crop every sixth year. A landing party of Doctor McCoy, First Officer Spock, and myself has beamed down to the Ribolian surface to survey the problem first hand. Mister Newt Henderson, of the Ribolian Settlers League, has taken us in hand.
Getting their first look at a dranzer herd from an aircar, they become aware of the immense size of their problem. The herd could stampede tomorrow or in six months. They capture and study a live dranzer, and soon Spock devises a solution. But scouts from an outpost of the Delatra family ranch in the northwest hills send an alert to Henderson — the stampede has started.
Henderson provides Kirk with a number of high-speed groundcars for use in diverting the path of the stampede. A few brave local volunteers operate the vehicles. 1.8 liters of highly concentrated synthetic dranzer musk is split between the vehicles. Kirk, Spock, and McCoy command separate groups of the ground vehicles, releasing the musk to redirect the rampaging animals along a planned route. As their vehicles begin to get low on fuel, Henderson panics, thinking they're about to be crushed by animals in front and behind them. In actuality, they've caught up to the rear of the herd they were leading, and have successfully diverted the animals into a circular path west of the colony, where they'll cause no further harm.
Although crops will no longer be trampled, Spock points out a consequence. The natural fertilizer resulting from dead dranzers along the stampede route will have to be added manually to the farmers' soil.
