"The Nagus" is the 11th episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in the show's first season, first aired during the week of 21 March 1993. The episode was written by Ira Steven Behr and David LivingstonMA and directed by David LivingstonMA. The Grand Nagus, the leader of the Ferengi people, arrives on Deep Space 9 and names Quark as his successor.

Summary[]

Grand Nagus Zek, the Ferengi leader, arrives on Deep Space 9 and visits Quark's. Zek's son Krax speaks for his father, telling Quark and the purpose for their visit will soon be announced. For now, Zek jus wants to use Quark's holosuite programs.

Eventually, Zek reveals his intentions and hosts a conference for notable Ferengi businessmen in Quark's during which he reveals his plans for Ferengi expansion into the Gamma Quadrant. Zek stuns the other Ferengi when he announces that he is standing down and names Quark as the new Nagus. Zek himself dies soon after.

Now Grand Nagus, Quark is threatened and barely misses being assassinated with a bomb. He hires his brother Rom as his bodyguard, but doesn't realize that Rom is working with Krax to kill him. They lure Quark to a airlock with the intent of blasting him into space, but are stopped by a very much alive Zek, who faked his death and made Quark Nagus to see if his son Krax was ready for leadership, but by acting like a Klingon is not. Zek plans to oversee the Gamma Quadrant expansion himself and that he will return to the station someday. Quark is impressed that Rom tried to kill him and makes Rom assistant manager of the bar.
