The New York Times (1851-1990s) was a daily newspaper published in New York City in the 19th and 20th centuries, with its successor the New New York Times continuing well into the 21st century.

History

On 31 January 1958, The Times published an article on the launch of Explorer 1 from Cape Canaveral, America's first space probe, following the Soviet 1957 launch of Sputnik 1.

On 21 July 1969, The Times published an article on the lunar landing of Apollo 11 by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin. (ST reference: Spaceflight Chronology)

The Times was destroyed during the 1990s Eugenics Wars. Among New York City's rebuilding efforts, the New New York Times was founded. (ST reference: Federation: The First 150 Years)

In a 2360s Dixon Hill holodeck program set in 1941, a criminal read an issue of The Times in his hotel room. (TNG episode: "The Big Goodbye")

Alternate timeline

In an alternate timeline accidentally created when Leonard McCoy saved the life of Edith Keeler, he'd noticed several New York City newspapers, including The Times, The World and The Star Dispatch. When he told her that his friends might have trouble locating him, Keeler suggested that he buy classified ads in local newspapers. He placed ads in all of the local papers in hopes that computer records of some might survive into the 23rd century. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)
