The Poisoned Chalice is a 2013 novel from author James Swallow. It is the fourth of five novels making up Star Trek: The Fall miniseries which centers around the Federation and the Typhon Pact.
Description[]
- The fourth novel in an electrifying The Next Generation/Deep Space Nine crossover event!
- One simple act, and the troubles of the United Federation of Planets have grown darker overnight. The mystery behind the heinous terrorist attack that has rocked the Federation to its core grows ever deeper, and William Riker finds himself beset by rumors and half-truths as the USS Titan is ordered back to Earth on emergency orders from the admiralty. Soon, Riker finds himself drawn into a game of political intrigue, bearing witness to members of Starfleet being detained—including people he considered friends—pending an investigation at the highest levels. And while Riker tries to navigate the corridors of power, Titan’s tactical officer, Tuvok, is given a series of clandestine orders that lead him into a gray world of secrets, lies, and deniable operations. Who can be trusted when the law falls silent and justice becomes a quest for revenge? For the crew of the U.S.S. Titan, the search for answers will become a battle for every ideal the Federation stands for.
Summary[]
The Titan is recalled to Earth, where Akaar has Riker promoted to admiral. Eventually, he informs him that evidence that the True Way were behind the assassination of President Bacco is being deliberately ignored by Pro Tem President Ishan, who is instead stirring up ill feelings against the Typhon Pact and the Andorians. Riker has Vale temporarily placed in command of the USS Lionheart to investigate further.
Meanwhile, Tuvok is recruited as part of Active Four, a secret special ops team, which also includes Nog and Thomas Riker, led by Starfleet Intelligence operative Jan Kincade and acting under orders from Ishan's chief of staff Velk. They are supposed to be tracking down the Tzenkethi responsible for the assassination but quickly realise their targets are Cardassians. They manage to capture four True Way operatives but instead of taking them back to Earth they are ordered to take them to an Imperial Intelligence base staffed by Klingon mercenaries.
Vale is contacted by Sarina Douglas, who gives her the location where Bashir is being held. Troi enlists the help of the Andorians, who grant Bashir citizenship and make him an honorary member of the Andorian envoy's family, forcing his guards to release him into their custody. Despite an attempt to murder him en route by one of the Lionheart's crew, Seth Maslan, he is delivered safely to Andoria.
When it becomes clear that Kincade is torturing the prisoners to death, Tuvok, Nog and Tom attempt to get them off the planet and back to Federation space. The Cardassians are killed in a firefight with Kincade's mercenaries, shortly before a raid on the facility by the Titan and two Klingon birds of prey. In the confusion, Nog kills Kincade and the Titan manages to rescue Tuvok, Nog, Tom and the other Starfleet member of Active Four, Ixxen, but the Klingons destroy the facility and kill everyone else present to cover up their people's involvement.
The Titan returns to Earth where Riker learns Velk has been arrested after taking full responsibility for Active Four's operations, with Ishan evading being connected with it. Determined to prevent him gaining power, Riker and Troi decide to contact Picard and the Enterprise for help.
