"The Price of Freedom" was the third issue in the four-part Star Trek: The Original Series miniseries The Modala Imperative. The story was initially published by DC Comics in late August 1991, then reprinted in a miniseries omnibus in October 1992. This story was written by Michael Jan Friedman and drawn by Pablo Marcos. In this story, James T. Kirk and Pavel Chekov joined a prison break.
Summary[]
Following a lead to Kirk and Chekov's whereabouts, Spock and Leonard McCoy approached a large citadel. Aboard the USS Enterprise, John Kyle isolated Kirk and Chekov's bio-patterns, and could beam up the officers as soon as they were alone. Within the prison walls, a Modalan nominated Kirk to replace their dead rebel leader. Kirk pointed out a young but suitable leader among their own group.
The rebel prisoners attempted an escape, but guards caught sight of them and a firefight began. Chekov used a captured weapon to disarm one of the guards, and the prisoners made it outside. The sudden movements in combat broke Kyle's transporter lock, and, unfortunately, pursuing guards discovered Spock and McCoy lurking outside the prison.
