- Captain Mackenzie Calhoun and the crew of the USS Excalibur are back, picking up three months after the stunning events depicted in New Frontier: Blind Man's Bluff. Calhoun's search of Xenex has failed to find any survivors, and now he is bound and determined to track down the race that killed them—the D'myurj and their associates, the Brethren—and exact vengeance upon them. His search will take the Excalibur crew into a pocket universe, where he discovers not only the homeworld of the D'myurj, but another race that shares Calhoun's determination to obliterate his opponents. But is this new race truly an ally… or an even greater threat?

- The e-book cover art was modeled by Doug Drexler, with design by Alan Dingman.
- The e-book cover depicts an Ambassador-class starship. While New Frontier readers are most familiar with the Ambassador-class USS Excalibur NCC-26517, that Excalibur was destroyed in the New Frontier novel "Dark Allies". The ship on this volume's cover seems to bear a different name on the hull at the shuttlebay deck. The current version of the Excalibur (NCC-26517-A) is a Galaxy-class ship. The review of this volume at Trekcore.com notes that the Ambassador type vessel does not seem to have anything to do with the story narrative. It seems the vessel is shown for nostalgia, or perhaps based on an error.
- This volume was the first New Frontier book released after Blind Man's Bluff, which came out almost 6 years earlier.
