"The Search" is a Star Trek: Deep Space Nine comic, the first part of The Secret of the Lost Orb trilogy, which is continued in "Acceptable Losses" and "Gods of War. Kira learns of another orb sent out of the wormhole by the Prophets.
Summary[]
Kira is in Quark's, at a table listening to a young Bajoran vedek called Solon who is telling the story of a missing orb of the Prophets. Kira has heard stories of it before, from her time in the Resistance, when it was touted as a way to help end the Occupation. Solon asks for more detail, but they are interrupted when a Nausicaan approaches and smashes the table. Solon is knocked to the ground and the Nausicaan demands back what Solon stole from him. Solon takes a knife from the Nausicaan's belt and stabs him with it. Solon is soon arrested by Odo.
Solon is revealed to be a Human disguised as a Bajoran by the name of Lane Crockett, who is seeking information on the lost orb. Crockett has a shady background, but shocks Sisko, Kira and Odo when he reveals he is working for Kai Winn to search for the orb. The Kai confirms that she has engaged Crockett's services, and as he killed the Nausicaan in self defence Odo has no choice but to release him. Sisko orders Crockett off the station, which he was visiting in the guise of a Vedek to get information from Kira.
Crockett travels to Bajor to meet with a secretive Bajoran religious order who are believed to possess the orb. Kira worries about Kai Winn's true motives and plans to investigate, but Sisko is not keen to involve the Federation in a Bajoran matter. Crockett meanwhile has gained an audience with the leader of the Bajoran order, who Crockett has learnt are very different from the other more peaceful religious orders. This order planted the seeds for the Bajoran Resistance during the Occupation, based on their studies of warfare and combat. They obtained all this through contact with the orb, to which Crockett is soon shown to in the room that contains it. Crockett steals the orb and escapes Bajor, seemingly not working for Kai Winn at all.
Crockett's ship enters the wormhole. Dax and O'Brien pursue him in the Rio Grande but when they reach the Gamma Quadrant they are fired on by numerous alien vessels and forced to withdraw back to the Alpha Quadrant. Kai Winn reveals that Crockett was working for these aliens all along. The aliens received an orb from the Prophets centuries ago and want a second. Kira vows to retrieve the orb.
