The Three Stooges were a comedy team in the early 20th century on Earth, famous for a series of films relying heavily on slapstick humor. Moe Howard and Larry Fine appeared in all these films, while the role of the third "stooge" was played by several different actors, including Curly Howard and Shemp Howard.

When Vulcan explorer Stron was stranded on Earth in 1957, a local boy noted that he wore his hair in a style similar to Moe Howard's. His colleague Mestral agreed with this observation (ENT episode: "Carbon Creek").

Beginning in the mid-22nd century, Orions had a craze for the Three Stooges after the UNSS Marco Polo sold them a cargo of artifacts from that era on reference stardate 0/7907.27 (c. 2150) (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge).

The short films of The Three Stooges featuring Shemp were considered by the Ferengi to be the only truly humorous aspect of Human culture. (DS9 reference: Legends of the Ferengi)
