"The Wake" is the last of six comics published in WildStorm Comics' Star Trek Special anthology in February 2001.

Description[]

Star Trek novelist Jeffrey Lang and Eisner winner Steve Lieber help us bid farewell to a much-loved character.

Summary[]

Montgomery Scott visits the home of retired Admiral Leonard McCoy in 2371 to have a wake for James T. Kirk, who was recently reported as dying on Veridian III. Scott feels that Kirk's sacrifice to save an inhabited planet better fits the man's legacy. Scott pours two shots of whiskey. They toast Kirk, though McCoy isn't able to drink due to medical complications. Scott hopes to gather remaining friends later for another wake. He gives McCoy a memento, a hologram of Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Hikaru Sulu and Nyota Uhura on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 2260s. He bids McCoy farewell.

Two hours later, Spock wakes McCoy. He'd heard about Kirk and paused his work on Romulus to report back to Earth. McCoy offers him the leftover whiskey as "the human thing to do". Spock claims the dead don't need him to pay them his respects. Spock sees McCoy is overtaxed and lets him sleep, then makes a toast "to absent friends".
