A Tholian dreadnaught was a class of Tholian starship, a dreadnought in service to the Tholian Assembly during the late-23rd century.

Specifications[]

This type of vessel was equipped with supplemental fusion reactors and impulse engines to increase available energy. It also had a damage-resistant crystalline hull. (Adventures RPG module: IDW Year Five Tie-In)

Service history[]

In 2269, a Tholian dreadnought armed with a type of stasis weapon slaughtered its own colony on Lloyd Zeta IX. When the Starfleet starship USS Enterprise responded to a distress call from the colony, the dreadnought approached the ship in orbit. (TOS - Year Five - Odyssey's End comic: "Issue 1")

The dreadnought fired its Tholian stasis weapon, killing several crewmen and disabling sensitive systems such as sensors. Captain James T. Kirk ordered an immediate retreat at warp one.

When the dreadnought caught up with them, Spock recommended relocating the Enterprise within the gravity well of the hypergiant star Lloyd Zeta to a specific point near the orbital Einstein-Rosen Ouroboros probe. When the dreadnought fired at the ship, the Ouroboros deflected the beam harmlessly. Captain James T. Kirk then warned the vessel's CO not to remain in the gravity well, but it was caught in the gamma radiation energy between the star and the Ouroboros, and was destroyed. (TOS - Year Five - Odyssey's End comic: "Issue 2")

Appendices[]

Background[]

The vessel was referred to as a destroyer in the plot summary of Year Five, Issue 2, and as a dreadnought in the summary in Year Five, Issue 3, but no classification was mentioned within the story itself. IDW Year Five Tie-In identified it as a dreadnaught.
