Tic-tac-toe was a type of Human game in which two players compete to fill in three boxes in a row within a 3x3 square grid with either an X or O.
During Lieutenant Lee Kelso's memorial service aboard the USS Enterprise in late 2265, Captain James T. Kirk mused that Kelso hated to come second in anything, even tic-tac-toe. (TOS - My Brother's Keeper novel: Constitution)
When Harry Kim referred to kal-toh as "Vulcan chess" in 2374, Tuvok commented that "kal'toh is to chess as chess is to tic-tac-toe". (VOY episode: "Alter Ego")
