"He may have been a hero, he may even have been a great man – but in the end, he was a bad captain."
Nog, 2374[src]

Tim Watters was a male human Starfleet Academy Cadet and a member of Red Squad in the late 24th century.

Biography[]

While aboard the USS Valiant during training maneuvers in 2373, Watters was chosen to assume a command role under the watchful eye of Captain Ramirez. Red Squad cadets under the supervision of a commissioned Starfleet officer manned all key starship officer positions, with the Valiant's primary training mission to circumnavigate Federation space.

During a Cardassian attack, Captain Ramirez and all other commissioned officers were killed, leaving only the members of Red Squad to operate the Defiant-class vessel. Before his death, Captain Ramirez gave a battlefield commission of full Captain to Watters, inheriting orders to collect technical data on a new class of Dominion battleship.

In 2374, Watters and the Valiant rescued Ensign Nog and Jake Sisko from the runabout USS Shenandoah out of Deep Space 9 after the ship came under attack by Jem'Hadar fighters. Watters gave Nog a battlefield commission of Lieutenant Commander and assigned him as Chief Engineer. After finding the prototype battleship, the Valiant was able to collect the data as ordered, but Watters proposed exploiting a potential weakness to destroy the craft before it could strike any local targets. However, the plan failed, and Watters perished in the battle along with all but one member of his Red Squad team. (DS9 episode: "Valiant")

Watters was posthumously awarded the Drakon Cluster of Courage. (DS9 - Strange New Worlds III short story: "Dorian's Diary")

In honor of Watters, Starfleet Academy introduced the Watters Ribbon of Valor, an award presented to cadets who show exceptional leadership. (ST reference: Celebrations)
