A time zone is a region that observes a standard time for legal, commercial, and social purposes. Such regions may be areas of a planet, a ship, or a space based installation.

Earth was divided in to 37 time zones. Two examples of time zones were the Eastern and Pacific time zones. San Francisco was located within the Pacific time zone. (DS9 episode: "Paradise Lost")
