The tivara was played at religious services, during the Gratitude Festival and at a hylyptus-planting ceremony. (DS9 episodes: "Resurrection", "Fascination", DS9 comic: "A Tree Grows on Bajor")

Varani was a famous tivara player. He played at the forum in Jalanda. (DS9 episode: "Sanctuary")
