A Tommy gun, short for Thompson submachine gun, was a type of 20th century machine gun named for its developer, John Thompson, which fired up to 900 bullets per minute. A circular cartridge held either 50 or 100 rounds of ammunition.

In 2271, robbers wielding Tommy guns attempted a heist at First Security Bank and Trust on Iotia. A flying, caped-wearing man in an exoskeleton suit landed and confronted them. The robbers exhausted their ammo on him, with the spray of bullets knocking him off his feet. When their clips were emptied, he got up and bent their guns into "U" shapes.
