A tornado is rapidly rotating column of air that is often quite destructive. Tornados have been known to occur on a number of worlds, including Earth, Izar, and Bajor.

In The Wizard of Oz a young human female named Dorothy was transported to a fantasy world named Oz due to a tornado that hit the farm she lived on in Kansas.

Izar was noted for its extreme weather, which included tornadoes. Because of this many cities on Izar were built underground since the planet had little geological activity. (ST reference: The Worlds of the Federation)

Once common on Earth, the introduction of weather control tecnhnolgy drastically reduced the danger of tornadoes. By the 24th century any tornadoes that formed could be dissipated by the weather modification network. USS Enterprise Captain Jean-Luc Picard was surprised to learn that a tornado had killed Amanda Rogers' parents since on Earth the network should have dissipated a tornado long before it could cause any damage. (TNG episode: "True Q")

On Bajor, in 2374 the city of Tamulna was hit by a tornado during the Reckoning. (DS9 episode: "The Reckoning")
