Commander Tracy Dane was a female Starfleet officer who served as first officer aboard the USS Enterprise-B in 2294.

Dane was born in 2261 and came from a long-line of military officers from those who served in the Union armies during the American Civil War right the way into Starfleet. As a result of her upbringing, she believed that Starfleet was a strict military organization and demanded military perfection from the crew of the Enterprise.

Captain John Harriman handpicked her as his first officer over the offer of a Vulcan first officer, as he believed he couldn't work well with an unemotional first officer. However, he came to learn that Dane kept her emotions tightly in check and this led to several tense arguments between the two in private, most notably, following the "death" of Ensign Demora Sulu following a rescue mission to Askalon V. While Harriman wanted to return to Earth to deliver Sulu's body home to her family, Dane believed that the Enterprise should continue on to its next assignment. Harriman's argument won and the Enterprise returned to Earth. (TOS novel: The Captain's Daughter).
