The Treaty of Kammzdast was an agreement between the many ancient races frequenting the Rigel system. It was primarily concerned with the use of Orion slaves, and its signing marked the beginning of the Orion Era.

When Orion slavery began to take off, circa 16,000 BCE, slavers considered it easier to capture Orions that had already been enslaved by other races, as they would have been "broken" already. As a precaution against this, one of the slavers, P'tak of the Sugg, armed his own slaves with slugthrowers, thinking that their fear of being separated from their homes and families would make them their own best protectors. The other slavers began arming their slaves in reprisal, and soon, proxy wars waged between groups of increasingly better-armed Orion slaves threatened to overrun the planets near Rigel.

In 15,956 BCE (reference stardate −179/56), delegates from every Orion-using race gathered on the planet Kammzdast to discuss the problem. The result was the Treaty of Kammzdast, which strictly regulated the transfer of technology to Orions, with every signatory monitoring the others for violations. (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge) The Rigellians signed the Treaty to preserve peace in the Rigel system, but never dealt in Orion slaves. (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Deep Knowledge)

The treaty stipulated that Orions could not bear arms outside of the Rigel system, though the slaves could be taken from the planet for other purposes. Proxy combat was only permitted on the "unsettled" Rigel worlds, which included the Orion homeworld of Botchok (Rigel VIII).

The Treaty of Kammzdast remained in effect for over ten thousand years, maintaining a general peace in the area around Rigel and regulating the use and allowances of the Orion slaves. The treaty was modified to suit the changing situation over the years by a series of Rigel Conferences, the first of which occurred in 15,839 BCE (stardate −178/39). As old civilizations collapsed and new ones came to the Rigel system, the signatories to the treaty gradually changed; only two of the original signatories were left by 13,781 BCE (stardate −157/81), and most were gone after the Long Winter (the Rigellians were one surviving original signatory race).

The Treaty was finally abolished at the end of the Orion War with the Declaration of Nallin, which made all Orions free and independent of the signatories. (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge)

Known signatories[]

As of 9143 BCE (stardate −111/43), there were 58 cultures dominating Botchok. In 5450 BCE (stardate −74/50), there were 32 races using Orions as slaves. During the Orion War, the Orions battled 58 other races, and defeated 13. (FASA RPG module: The Orions: Book of Common Knowledge)

All Orion-slave-owning races mentioned in the source are presumed to be Kammzdast signatories.
