The trident scanner was an engineering tool used in the Federation, notably on various Starfleet vessels, in the 23rd century.

History and specifics[]

In the year 2254, a technician used a trident scanner in engineering as extensive battle damage repairs were being made to the USS Enterprise. (EV comic: "Futures, Part One")

In 2267, Montgomery Scott used a trident scanner while cross-circuiting controls aboard the heavily damaged USS Constellation. (TOS episode: "The Doomsday Machine")

After Miles O'Brien and Julian Bashir left him to repair a damaged power conduit in a corridor of the Enterprise, Lieutenant Nagata's first step was to use a trident scanner. (DS9 episode & novelization: Trials and Tribble-ations)

In 2268, Lieutenant Ali Harper was using a trident scanner to sever connections between the M-5 computer and the Enterprise power systems. At that moment, M-5 directed an energy beam at a power relay. Being in the line of fire, the beam vaporized him and the scanner. (TOS episode: "The Ultimate Computer")
