Tungsten (symbol W) is a chemical element, a transition metal with atomic number 74 on the periodic table.

Characteristics and history[]

Tungsten has an atomic mass of 183.85. This element was discovered by Humans for the first time on Earth's European continent in Spain, in the year 1783. (ST reference: Star Fleet Medical Reference Manual)

In 2156, the Enterprise provided tungsten, magnesium, and cobalt to the Tellarite freighter pilots Skalaar and Gaavrin so that they could rebuild their warp coils. (ENT - The Romulan War novel: To Brave the Storm)

In 2255 in the Kelvin timeline, the latch of the manual override mechanism of the door to Cadet Pavel Chekov's room at Starfleet Academy was held in place by a tungsten spring. (TOS - Starfleet Academy novel: The Gemini Agent)
