Tyrtaeus was a star with an associated system located in Federation space within the galaxy's Alpha or Beta Quadrants. It supported two interstellar civilizations.
History and specifics[]
The Tyrtaeus system's orbit was the location of a number of worlds, including second planet Tyrtaeus II, homeworld of the Tyrtaean civilization.
In the 22nd century, Tyrtaeus was in the outskirts of Federation space, but by the 2220s it was considered dangerously close to the Romulan Neutral Zone, prompting the Human colonists on Tyrtaeus II to join the Federation for defense.
The core of the star periodically contained a subspace sun-core station, an alien space station located within the subspace of the star, a structure which refueled a mobile artifact that ordinarily remained hidden within the comet ring in the outer reaches of the system. This artifact supported an alien civilization which lived a virtual reality existence and had no interest in the physical universe.
In 2267, the starship USS Enterprise visited the Tyrtaeus system. When the mobile artifact approached Tyrtaeus, the crew thought it might endanger the star and tried unsuccessfully to divert its course. After making first contact, the inhabitants chose to abandon the Tyrtaeus system altogether in order to regain their privacy. (TOS novel: Heart of the Sun)
- Tyrtaeus was depicted on the book cover as a yellow star. It was probably named after the ancient Greek poet who lived in the 7th century B.C..
