"USS" is a ship's name prefix appearing before the name of Federation Starfleet starships. The prefix is short for "United Star Ship." (TOS episode: "The Cage")

Other sources suggest that USS stands for "United Space Ship" or "UFP Star Ship."
"Life Form Nonexistent" suggests USS stands for "Universe Star Ship", under the premise that the USS Enterprise's mission of exploration extends throughout the reaches of the universe.
