The USS Achernar (NCC-1732) was a Federation starship, a Constitution-class heavy cruiser in service to Starfleet in the late 23rd century. In particular, Achernar was ordered for construction as the prototype of the Achernar-subclass, named for the star Achernar.
Construction of Achernar was authorized by the Starfleet appropriation of stardate 5930. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
- The stardate given would seem to suggest this ship was ordered during the TAS era, however this date is fairly uncertain since FASA RPG module: The Four Years War records Achernar-class vessels were in service during the 2250s war with the Klingons.
The Achernar had entered service by the 2280s, by which time she had been refit to Enterprise-class specifications and had been redesignated as a galactic survey cruiser. (TOS video game: Starfleet Command Volume II: Empires at War)
