USS Poseidon had entered service in the 22nd century and saw action against the Romulan Star Empire during the Earth-Romulan War in the year 2159. (ST video game: Legacy)
Following a hostile encounter with the Romulans during a rescue mission on behalf of the Confederacy of Vulcan around April or May 2159, acting fleet commander Captain Jonathan Archer was authorised to requisition Poseidon-class destroyers for a mission to Research Station Gravenor. By then, the name had passed onto the Yorktown-class battleship USS Adams (NCC-410). (ST video game: Legacy mission: "Breakwater")
