The USS Amalthea[3] (NCC-80108[1]) was a 24th century Federation starship, a Luna-class science vessel in Starfleet service from the 2370s decade. (TTN novel: Sword of Damocles, "Titan Fold-out")
Service history[]
Namesakes[]
Like all Luna-class starships, the Amalthea was named after a moon in the Sol star system. In this instance, Amalthea. In turn, these were named after Human mythology from the history of the planet Earth. (TNG novel: Greater Than the Sum)
In the 2350s, Starfleet operated a ship named USS Amalthea Rex, a Thomas Paine-class class IX frigate. (FASA RPG module: Star Trek: The Next Generation Officer's Manual)
Active service[]
The first batch of Luna-class starships entered service in the year 2379. The Callisto, Europa, Io and the Ganymede were also named after moons of Jupiter. (TTN novel: Taking Wing, "Luna Class Concept Notes")
By the year 2380 of the First Splinter[5] timeline, Starfleet had sent its Luna-class science vessels on missions of exploration, including the Amalthea. (TTN novel: Sword of Damocles, "Titan Fold-out")
In 2381, the Amalthea was 300 lightyears beyond Federation space. Commander Edward La Forge served aboard the Amalthea as science officer at the time. During the Borg Invasion of 2381 in February 2381, the Amalthea was too far out to be recalled for the Federation's desperate last stand against the Borg Collective.
In the aftermath of the Borg's war of attempted extermination, the Amalthea continued its exploratory assignment. (TNG novel: Losing the Peace)
