The USS Antares (NCC-1820) was a Federation starship, a Constitution-class (Tikopai-subclass) heavy cruiser in Starfleet service in the late 23rd and early 24th centuries, named for the star system at Antares.
Construction of Antares was authorized by the Starfleet appropriation of stardate 5930. (TOS reference: Star Fleet Technical Manual)
- The stardate given would seem to suggest this ship was ordered during the TAS era.
Antares was built as a Ranger-class battle carrier (BCV). (ST video games: Starfleet Command II: Empires at War, Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates)
- No history or definitive fate is established for this vessel in the SFC game series as its name was randomly selected for a carrier by the SFC games' software.
At some point in their respective careers, both Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain Ivan Gruzinov previously served on the Antares. (TNG novel: Blaze of Glory)
Prior to 2333 the Antares was under the command of veteran starship Captain Sannek. Lieutenant Nol Kastiigan also served aboard during Sannek's command. Following Starfleet's decision to decommission the Antares and replace her with a new Constellation-class vessel, Sannek retired from the service after recommending Kastiigan for the science officer's position aboard the USS Stargazer.
