The USS Archimedes (NCC-83002) was a 24th century Federation starship, an Obena-class[1] vessel of the line in Starfleet service in the 2380s decade. Its commanding officer was Captain Sonya Gomez. (LD episode: "First First Contact")

Namesake[]
In the 23rd century, Starfleet operated a small survey vessel named USS Archimedes. The vessel was active around the 2230s. (DSC novel: Die Standing)
Active service[]

Sonya Gomez served as the modern ship's captain by the year 2381. (LD episode: "First First Contact")
In the 2360s, she had been an engineer aboard the USS Enterprise. (TNG episode: "Q Who")
In the 2370s, Gomez was a member of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers and served aboard the USS da Vinci. (SCE - Have Tech, Will Travel novel: The Belly of the Beast)
In 2381, the Archimedes went on a joint mission with the USS Cerritos, a California-class starship specialized in second contact assignments, to establish first contact with the Laaperians. The Archimedes was critically damaged during the endeavor, with all power failing and a warp nacelle breaking off, and threatened to crash into the Laaperian homeworld. The Cerritos, after shedding its outer hull, was able to rescue the Archimedes and its crew in the nick of time. Captain Carol Freeman then led the first contact mission, while repair ships tended to both the Archimedes and the Cerritos. These events occurred at the same time as the destruction of Pakled Planet. (LD episode: "First First Contact")

- Series creator Mike McMahan has identified the Archimedes variant as Obena class. However, the name has not appeared in published material yet. The "First First Contact" audio description identifies the Archimedes as belonging to the Excelsior class.
