Service history and deposition[]
A transporter malfunction sent James T. Kirk from the USS Enterprise in 2273 to Pearl Harbor on 6 December 1941. He became friends with Elsa Kelly, wife of Richard Kelly, who served aboard the USS Arizona. In the early morning of December 7th, Kirk and Elsa heard the sounds of war planes, and wanted to warn her husband and the ship's crew of an impending attack, but Kirk resisted, wary of altering history. (Phase II episode: "Tomorrow and the Stars")
On 7 December 1941, the USS Arizona and other vessels were sunk during a surprise attack by bombers from the Empire of Japan. On 8 December, the United States declared war on Japan, bringing the United States of America into World War II. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)
In an alternate timeline accidentally created when Leonard McCoy saved the life of Edith Keeler, the Arizona was sunk in 1944 rather than 1941. World War II continued into 1955 and was eventually won by the Axis. (TOS - Crucible novel: Provenance of Shadows)
