The USS Artemis (NCC-0327) was a 24th century Federation starship, an explorer craft designed to safely enter the Nexus energy ribbon, entering Starfleet service in the 2370s decade. (ST video game: Legends)

Service history and disposition

USS Montana

The Artemis in the 2260s.

In the mid-23rd century, the name Artemis was carried by a smaller Archer-class scout. (VAN novel: Reap the Whirlwind)

Spock previously served aboard that vessel as science and third officer. (TOS novel: Vulcan's Glory)

In 2293, the USS Enterprise-B suffered damage during a rescue mission to the Nexus near the Sol star system.

Seventy-eight years later, on stardate 48650.1[1] in 2371, the Federation lost the Galaxy-class explorer USS Enterprise-D soon after its encounter with the Nexus. Captain Jean-Luc Picard encountered versions of James T. Kirk and Guinan stranded within the Nexus. (TNG movie & novelization: Generations)

Launched in 2371, Artemis was the first ship able to enter the Nexus. (ST video game: Legends: Episode 1: "Into the Nexus")

Artemis was sent to the Nexus to recover any other Starfleet officers or people stuck in the Nexus. Near the anomaly, the Artemis suffered an unidentified catastrophe that caused the crew to vanish. Only the commanding officer appeared to remain. Using the transporter, the captain attempted to recover their personnel, only to beam Commander Michael Burnham, science officer, USS Discovery, from 2257, aboard. Moments later, a Cardassian Galor-class vessel attacked the Artemis. (Episode 1, mission: "To Boldly Go")

After disabling the Galor, Commander Burnham beamed over and fought against the Cardassian crew. The Artemis was able to recover another Starfleet officer, Lieutenant Worf. Burnham overcame her surprise at seeing a Klingon Starfleet officer, and meeting Cardassians for the first time. Together, they disabled the warp core. (Episode 1, mission: "Disabling the Core")

Recovering Doctor Leonard McCoy, dating back to 2266-70, the trio of officers permanently disabled the Cardassian vessel, and the Artemis received a distress call from a planetbound Federation base.

On the planet's surface, the Cardassians were led by Gul Skrain Dukat. He claimed that the Starfleet officers were not real, and were in fact ghosts. Following his defeat, the away team reached the base but found the officers comatose or dead. Commander Burnham decided to return to Artemis before proceeding. (Episode 1, mission: "Breaching the Defenses")

Returning to base, the Artemis officers encountered an advanced holographic system, controlled by a computer based on Talosian illusion techniques. The base commander reported in her log that the base was engaged in unethical research into Talos IV technology. In a shuttlebay loaded with drones and workbees, a seemingly holographic version of Captain Kathryn Janeway of USS Voyager led a team of hostile Starfleet personnel. Following their defeat, the Artemis crew learned about the Talosian experiments going on. (Episode 1, mission: "Old Ghosts")

The team disabled the rogue computer, identified as Talos Computer, and quarantined Talos Base, a Section 31 installation. In the aftermath, Commander William T. Riker from Worf's time joined the Artemis crew. (Episode 1, mission 06)

Remaining within the irreal space of the Nexus, the Artemis next assisted Commander Spock of the Enterprise in recovering James T. Kirk. A version of the Romulan commander Sela had captured Kirk and delivered him into the hands of Commander Tomalak, who sought to trade Kirk to the Gorn Nest Father in order to establish an alliance between the Romulan Star Empire and the Gorn Hegemony within the Nexus. The Artemis crew helped Kirk survive a fight with a former Gorn champion, S'alath. The Nest Father only sought to restore his standing within Gorn society, and cooperated with Starfleet in repelling Tomalak and the duplicitous Romulans. While Kirk returned to the imaginary Enterprise, McCoy decided to stay aboard Artemis. The Gorn homeworld underneath vanished, and was replaced by a smaller, red planet. (Episode 2)

Investigating a Federation mayday on that world, the team found the remains of a crashed Danube-class runabout. (Episode 3)
