The USS Balmung (NCC-28964) was a Federation starship of unspecified class in service to Starfleet in the 24th century. It was named after Balmung, the mythical sword from Earth's Norse legends. (SOTL reference: Ships of the Line)

Service history and disposition[]

Structurally, the Balmung consisted of an Ambassador-class secondary hull connected to the circular saucer section through a low, wide neck. The ship's color scheme matched the regular Ambassador class. The impulse engines at the rear of the saucer were larger, and the edge of the primary hull featured a slope. The warp nacelles rested on sharply angled, Ambassador-type nacelle pylons. The nacelles themselves were defined by the wide cross section typical of Ambassadors of the 2330s but their overall design resembled the Excelsior-class engines. The shuttlebay, housing Type-4 or Type-5 shuttlecraft, was housed at the aft end of the engineering hull. (ST calendar: Ships of the Line 2012)

While on patrol near the Neutral Zone, the Balmung was resupplied by the cargo ship USS Mughi. The operation was undertaken by several workbees and at least two shuttlecraft, one of which was the Balmung's shuttle Weyland. (ST calendar: Ships of the Line 2012, SOTL reference: Ships of the Line)

At another point, the Balmung deployed a small communication relay station. (ST calendar: Ships of the Line 2019)

Again, at another point, the magnatomic amplification crystal in the ship's starboard nacelle was swapped out for a new unit. This maintenance work was completed at Ursa Major. (ST calendar: Ships of the Line 2022)

Background[]

The Balmung was designed by artist Dan Uyeno as a chronologically intermediate starship between the Excelsior-class and the Ambassador-class. Along with the Mughi, it was featured in the February 2012 Ships of the Line calendar image Reprovisioning at Sea, and the September 2019 Ships of the Line calendar image Relay Deployment.
